The Book Bin participates in our Group Pass Program for all of its employees
The Book Bin has been a downtown Salem institution for over 25 years, transporting customers to other worlds with a wide range of new and used books for sale. Conveniently located half of a block from the Downtown Transit Center, The Book Bin purchases bus passes for all of its employees as a part of our Group Pass Program. We caught up with one of their employees to hear about how their experience on the bus has changed during the pandemic…
“I truly appreciate how thoughtful Cherriots has been in its handling of transportation services throughout this pandemic period. It is wonderful to have access to this essential service, and see the care Cherriots is providing to drivers and riders.
“Since returning to work in mid-June I have been riding Cherriots home in the evenings and on Saturdays. At that time, the route I rode was operating one less scheduled run than before, but this did not affect my commute. Currently it is back to all of its scheduled runs, which I think is great.
“When I began riding Cherriots again, I was happy to see that there is a limit to the number of riders per bus, that masks are required, and that buses are sanitized between rides. All the drivers have been very conscientious about reminding riders to keep their masks on, and to sit spaced appropriately. In the very early stages of the pandemic, I did not feel safe riding the buses and I worried about the safety of the drivers, but my worries have been greatly alleviated now that these measures have been taken.
“I know that the waiving of fares is a temporary measure but I am glad that it was a step taken by Cherriots. Many people who are economically vulnerable rely on the buses as a form of low-cost transportation. These same people are disproportionately affected by the pandemic. I am sure having access to free transportation at this time is a significant help.
“Public transportation is an essential service which improves the lives of many. I am extremely thankful to the many drivers and administrators who have worked throughout this critical period. There is much that is subject to change – but I hope that Cherriots continues to keep foremost the safety of its workers and its ridership as we all move forward.”
And we are grateful for riders like the employees of The Book Bin who ride transit to keep our city humming with activity. We will continue to focus on safety so our riders can feel secure as they ride the bus to work, doctor’s appointments, and trips to the grocery store. Thank you for remembering to do your part as you wear your face covering, wash your hands frequently, and keep physical distance from others.
