Al McCoy brings 23+ years of experience to Team Cherriots

Al McCoy has joined Cherriots as its new Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer.

McCoy has more than 23 years of experience overseeing the finances of public transit agencies in Tennessee, Texas, Washington and California. He comes to Cherriots from the Memphis Area Transit Authority, where he served as Director of Finance. In a previous position, McCoy served as the Memphis transit agency’s assistant director of Finance.

Cherriots new CFO said he loves the Pacific Northwest. He seized the opportunity to work in Salem.

“It’s a very optimistic time for the agency, and the possibility of expanding service is always exciting,” McCoy said. In fall 2019, Cherriots intends to start providing weekend bus service and some later evening service, thanks to a new source of dedicated state funding from House Bill 2017.

“We’re excited to have Al on board,” said Cherriots General Manager Allan Pollock. “He brings with him a great breadth and depth of experience, especially in transit finance.”

McCoy’s career includes financial administrative positions with Sound Transit, Washington State Ferries, Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Sacramento Regional Transit. He was Budget Director for Southern Oregon University for two years.

At Cherriots, McCoy will supervise about seven employees. His primary duties are ensuring the fiscal sustainability of the organization, securing adequate funding for operations and capital projects, and providing financial information to the General Manager and the Board of Directors.

McCoy grew up on a farm in the central part of Mississippi. He has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Southern Mississippi, a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Belhaven University (Mississippi), and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at Dallas.
