Opportunities for citizen feedback on the proposal begin Dec. 15
In an effort to enhance operating efficiencies and passenger service, Cherriots is proposing updates to its fare categories and rates.
Every two years, an evaluation of the Cherriots fare structure is conducted at the direction of the Board of Directors. The last fare change for Cherriots occurred in 2019, which prepared the way for discounted youth fares later that year. Cherriots has not raised fares since January 2015.
Cherriots goals in updating the fare rates and structure in 2023 include:
● Increased ridership
● Improved equitable access to Cherriots services
● Creation of life-long public transportation users
● Encourage choices that promote environmental sustainability
● Balanced fare levels that optimize affordability and cost recovery
A Title VI fare equity analysis was conducted as part of the proposal development. The analysis showed that the proposed fare changes would not disparately impact members of a group identified by race, color, or national origin. Additionally, the fare changes would not incur a disproportionate burden to low-income populations.
The first reading of the proposed fare ordinance (Ordinance No. 2023-01) is set for Dec. 15, 2022, during the Board of Directors Meeting. A second reading will occur at the following Board Meeting on Jan. 26, 2023. The Board will consider citizen testimony during the Board Meeting on Dec. 15, and also in writing up to the second reading of the ordinance at the Board Meeting on Jan. 26, 2023. Written comments may be sent by email to board@cherriots.org and must be received by noon on Jan. 26, 2023.
If adopted, the proposed changes in the ordinance are proposed to take effect March 1, 2023.
