What is the project?
The Transit Signal Priority (TSP) project will implement TSP technology and Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) systems into the Cherriots transportation system. The project will equip intersections and Cherriots buses with GPS receivers that will prioritize green lights for buses at traffic signals to optimize transit routes in congested corridors in the City of Salem.
Notably, the system will only prioritize the green light for buses when the bus is behind schedule a specified amount (to be determined). So, a Cherriots bus that is running on time or below the specified threshold, will not trigger a green light priority request.
Where is the project at currently?
TSP technology was first implemented along the Lancaster corridor to serve Route 11. As of December 2025, there are 22 intersections on Lancaster Dr that are outfitted with TSP technology. Initial testing is now underway as Cherriots works with our operators and the City of Salem to understand real-world impacts to traffic flows and transit travel times.
What are the next steps?
While preliminary data is gathered from the initial deployment on Lancaster Dr, Cherriots and City of Salem staff will continue to collaborate and plan for the next TSP expansion in another corridor some time in 2026.
