More bus stop improvements are coming

The second group of stop improvements are now underway around Salem-Keizer this summer. Jeff Carter Construction has begun work on the first 35 stops in this group, focusing on gaps between the sidewalk and the curb to improve ADA accessibility. Later in the summer, the second part of this group will contain stops where an easement is needed to place an extension off of the back of the sidewalk in order to allow the ADA required depth of eight feet.

Funding

Federal and state grants provided funds for the multi-year Bus Stop Improvement Project. The funds are dedicated to capital improvement projects. The money cannot be used to pay for bus service operations, such as providing weekend bus service.

The Salem-Keizer Area Transportation Study (SKATS) Metropolitan Planning Organization approved a total of $695,380 from the Surface Transportation Program.

The Oregon Transportation Commission awarded Cherriots a grant of $1.9 million. The Transit District’s match for the project is $289,589.

How riders are affected

Temporary signs will be placed in advance of work, and we’ll post information about the specific stops affected on our Alerts page. The stops will generally have a temporary stop location for 10 days or less. Once construction is completed, the affected stop will be placed back in service, and the temporary stop will be removed as soon as possible.

Learn more about this multi-year project on the Bus Stop Improvement Project page. Stay current on all of the latest closures and temporary stop locations by checking our Alerts page throughout the summer.
